MAY 8-11: 2nd ANNUAL TOUR OF VERMONT

Picture
This May, Heliand Consort presents four concerts across Vermont featuring classical chamber music for woodwinds and piano by Telemann, Devienne, D'Rivera, Dvorak, Muczynski, and Poulenc.

The program takes listeners on a journey exploring some of the greatest pieces for woodwinds and piano from the baroque and classical eras through the 20th century. Among the highlights is the “Concerto in G Major” by Georg Philipp Telemann, one of the most prolific and creative German baroque composers. Also included are pieces which incorporate traditional dance music from the Old and New Worlds: selections from the “Slavonic Dances” by Antonin Dvorak and the “Danzon” by Cuban-American composer, Paquito D’Rivera, whose lyrical trio blends Cuban dance rhythms and Latin/jazz harmonies.

Dvorak’s lively dance suite was inspired by Brahms’s “Hungarian Dances”, and was originally composed for piano four hands (two pianists playing on a single keyboard). They are based on folk dances including the polka, mazurka, polonaise, and other traditional dances. The “Slavonic Dances” were an immediate hit, such that Dvorak’s publisher asked him to arrange the pieces for orchestra. Heliand Consort performs selections from the suite arranged for flute, clarinet, bassoon and piano.

Heliand Consort’s 2nd Annual Tour of Vermont is part of a nationwide celebration of chamber music taking place this May. The ensemble joins thousands of musicians across the country to celebrate National Chamber Music Month, sponsored by Chamber Music America. The tour features Berta Frank on flute, Elisabeth LeBlanc on clarinet, Rachael Elliott on bassoon, and Cynthia Huard on piano.

TOUR DATES:
May 8th: St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, St. Albans at 7:30 pm
May 9th:  Richmond Free Library, Richmond at 7 pm
May 10th:  First Congregational Church, Lyndonville at 7:30 pm
May 11th:  Bethany Church in Montpelier, 7:30 pm

This program has been made possible in part through the sponsorship of The Field, with funding provided by our generous season sponsors.

FEBRUARY 1, 2012
Our "Cafes and Schools" program was a delight!  Thanks to Christina Kelsh and Dave Grippo for hosting us in your schools, and to On the Rise Bakery in Richmond and Village Wine and Coffee in Shelburne for two great shows.  We heard from lots of folks who enjoyed hearing classical music in a low-key, comfortable setting, and we will be back with more in the coming season.

JANUARY 23, 2012
Happy New Year to all!  It may be chilly out there, but Heliand Consort offers a warm program of woodwind trios for schools in South Burlington and Westford as a part of our outreach program.  We'll perform music by Malcolm Arnold, Ludwig van Beethoven, Benjamin Britten, and others.  In addition, we'll present two classical chamber music sets this week:
    •  Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 3-5 pm at Village Wine and Coffee in Shelburne
    •  Thursday, Jan. 26 from 8-10 pm at On the Rise Bakery in Richmond

OCTOBER 12, 2011
Heliand Consort’s fifth season opens  with a potpourri of 20th century French music for woodwinds and piano by Debussy, Ravel and members of ‘Les Six.’  The program includes solo piano music by Maurice Ravel from Miroirs, trio d’anches (reed trios) by Jacques Ibert and Darius Milhaud, and the beloved Trio for oboe, bassoon and piano by Francis Poulenc.  Ahh, the perfumes of Paris!  We perform two shows this weekend in our home state of Vermont and then take the show to North Carolina for concerts  at UNC School for the Arts and Duke University.

JUNE 13-18, 2011
Our Summer Light Music tour of Vermont brings our woodwind quartet to historic and off-the-beaten path venues across northern Vermont. We perform a light set of classical favorites by Britten, Carter, Françaix and Jacob, plus the world premiere of What Pan Was Doing by Vermont composer, Don Jamison, for woodwind quartet/doubling voices. Why no piano, you ask? We were able to play in some more unusual areas of the state, including an off-the-grid church in East Calais and theater in Sheffield, both of which are serviced by outhouses! We also performed in the Historic Huntington Library, the gorgeous Grace Church in Sheldon (see John LeBlanc's beautiful photos we've posted on Facebook), Radio Bean in Burlington, and the Unitarian Church in Jericho.
